Bakersfield police to conduct DUI checkpoint at start of Memorial Day weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield police officers will conduct a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location Friday evening at the start of the Memorial Day weekend, the department said.

Officers will check drivers for any signs of potential alcohol or drug impairment beginning at 6:30 p.m. through 2 a.m. Saturday.

Bakersfield police said routine, well-publicized checkpoints can reduce the number of alcohol or drug-related crashes resulting in injury or death by 20%.

Officials said checkpoints are placed in areas based on collision and DUI arrest frequency. Drivers arrested on suspicion of DUI can face penalties including jail time, DUI classes and other costs that could exceed $10,000.

Anyone who suspects seeing a possibly impaired driver should immediately call 911.
