Noel Fielding’s debut on The Great British Bake Off has received positive reviews, but on social media it was his dulcet voiceovers became one of the biggest talking points as the show aired.

The comedian and Sandi Toksvig have replaced much-loved hosts Mel and Sue on the show which has moved from the BBC to Channel 4, dividing many Bake Off fans.

So all eyes were on the newest members of the Bake Off team during the first show and Twitter has already delivered its verdict.

“Why is Noel Fielding talking like he is reading a Mr Men book to children?” asked one.

“Noel Fielding's narration voice is very odd. It's like he's whispering out of reverence,” commented another viewer.

Others likened his GBBO commentary to a “posh phone voice”, while others joked it was like “David Attenborough observing the wild bakers”.

Many Bake Off fans joked about his “terribly polite” voice

Some weren't so impressed

Some viewers had other things on their minds

But the tweets about his 'soft' voice continued

The Mighty Boosh fans were also watching

Some thought he looked a bit out of place

But there was also much praise for his debut

The Telegraph’s Michael Hogan wrote Fielding’s debut on the show was a success:

“Hipster funnyman Fielding was the major revelation, stealing the show with his gently eccentric humour.

“Sporting a bird-patterned shirt and scraggy raven hair, it looked like an off-duty vampire had wandered into the tent.”
