Bahamas Boat Explosion: Victims Identified in Terrifying Blast
Authorities have released the names of tourists aboard a boat that mysteriously exploded in the Bahamas over the weekend.
All 10 passengers on the craft were Americans. Maleka Grimes Jackson, from Chattanooga, Tenn., was killed
Stefanie Schaffer, 22, from Rutland, Vt., lost both her legs in the explosion. The recent college grad was said to be a talented dancer and soccer player.
Schaffer was with her younger sister, mother and stepfather when disaster struck. She was positioned on the back of the boat, next to the engine, when it exploded.
Schaffer was taken to a Bahamas hospital, where both her legs were amputated. She is now in a medically induced coma and is not yet aware her life will never be the same.
Video of the explosion's aftermath was shot by a passenger on another tour boat that came to the rescue.
Some passengers aboard the nearby boat were worried that their vessel could also catch fire if they got too close. Others bravely waded through the shallow water to help.
One American was filmed holding a towel to his head as blood trickles down his back. He called for a doctor and by a stroke of good luck, one was aboard the rescue craft.
Four of the injured people were moved to Clearwater, Fla., hospital by the U.S. Coast Guard.
