Take Back the Night at LSU raises awareness about sexual and domestic violence

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Take Back the Night is an event that happens worldwide and LSU group Feminists in Action hosted a local event for the second year to show support for sexual and domestic violence survivors and educate more people about how to get help.

Annie Sheehan-Dean, activist chair for Feminists in Action, said the event is “a safe community space for both on LSU campus but also in the Greater Baton Rouge community.”

Feminists in Action President Myrissa Eisworth said the goal is to stop the stigmas and misconceptions around the issues. She said it’s important to change the wrong idea that “sexual violence and domestic violence only happens to women cause that’s really important, it definitely does happen to men and people who identify as nonbinary or gender non-conforming.”

The event sold shirts, and 50% of the proceeds were going to Iris Domestic Violence Center.

They also had different ribbons available to show support for different groups affected by violence in relationships.

“The purple ribbon represents supporting survivors of domestic violence, the yellow ribbon represents supporting survivors of stalking, and the teal ribbon represents supporting survivors of sexual violence,” Eisworth said.

Baton Rouge police said they’re trying to crack down on sexual assault.

On Tuesday, Jacob Woods, 27, was arrested and charged with false imprisonment, third-degree rape, second-degree sexual battery, second-degree battery, battery of a dating partner, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

LSU advocate groups said that sexual assault is more common than it should be and anyone who is a victim is not alone.
