What may have been intended as a joke could have had deadly consequences - and now two Massachusetts teens are facing the serious repercussions of their actions.

While babysitting an infant, two girls posted a video to Snapchat of themselves sticking the child in the refrigerator, according to the Boston Herald. The baby's cries can be heard through the door, and after several seconds, they open the fridge and take the child out while laughing. One says, "see, she's okay."

Shortly after the video was published, Danvers and Swampscott police learned about it, and the two girls were arrested on charges of child endangerment and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

"The refrigerator was the dangerous weapon," Essex district attorney spokesman Steve O'Connell told the Herald. After an extended period of time in a refrigerator, the baby could have suffocated and died. (In fact, children playing in fridges and getting trapped inside was such an issue that Congress passed the Refrigerator Safety Act of 1956.)

The Department of Children and Families is also investigating this incident, according to a spokesperson for the organization.

"Kids do do stupid things. I know she wouldn't hurt my daughter, and that wasn't her intentions," the baby's mother told local news station WCVB-5. "I think it was all foolishness, stupidity."

The mother had asked her niece and a friend to watch the baby while she took a shower. She was horrified to find out what they had done.

"I was in shock. I'm traumatized from that," she said. "You live, you learn, and this is a lesson my niece will learn. ... Be careful who you trust your children with. You can't trust anyone, not even your own family."
