Baby injured after gunfire strikes vehicle in Peoria, police say

A 9-month-old infant was hospitalized Wednesday night after they were struck with glass fragments following a shooting in South Peoria involving the vehicle they were riding in.

The Peoria Police Department said that at 8:34 p.m., they received a ShotSpotter report of 26 rounds fired in the 1700 block of South Ligonier Street. Officers didn't locate any victims but did find shell casings and a discarded AR-15 magazine at the corner of Grinnell and Ligonier streets.

Around an hour later, police were notified that the child had been sent to a local hospital after they had sustained injuries when a vehicle was struck by gunfire in the 1800 block of South Griswold Street. The injuries were not life-threatening.

PPD began an investigation into the incident, with criminal investigations being dispatched to the hospital and the crime scene and patrol units combing the scene. The incident remains under investigation, with no information as of Thursday morning regarding a suspect.
