Avon Lake ready to welcome campers for Total Solar Eclipse

AVON LAKE, Ohio (WJW) – Preparations continue to ramp up for the Total Solar Eclipse in Avon Lake where eclipse viewers will get the longest window to view the lunar phenomenon.

The city is expecting hundreds of campers to arrive and set up camp at two locations to enjoy the extended weekend.

“You can feel the excitement in the air as people are starting to arrive in town,” City of Avon Lake Recreation Director Erin Fach said.

Fach said two years of planning and preparation has them ready for eclipse viewers from around the region and out of state.

“We’re offering overnight parking at both Miller Road Park for RVs and campers,” he said. “We’re also doing tent camping at Weiss Field. We have 25 tent campers, some checking in as early as Saturday. And again, they’re running through Tuesday as well and so we’re just excited that they’re coming to Avon Lake, to kind of see everything that we have to offer.”

Tent camping at Weiss Field is sold out, but camper parking is still available for $150 a space. RV parking is available at Miller Road Park for $375 per space. both prices cover three nights.

“We’re right on the center of totality so really it’s totality’s best seat,” Fach said.

One distinct advantage campers have over other eclipse viewers is beating traffic. Cities across Northeast Ohio are expecting major traffic delays on April 8, but if you’re camping, you’ll have plenty of time to kill.

“It’s an opportunity to stagger in town and kind of stagger out, right? So come early, stay late, avoid that traffic that everybody talks about and sort of that gridlock that may occur on Monday,” Fach said.

There is also a 5K race and music festival planned on Sunday, plus a Solar Express bus route to take visitors around town to key points and shopping areas. Fach hopes this gives visitors plenty of options to enjoy Avon Lake.

“Enjoy it and make family memories. I know there’s a lot of families coming in town, a lot of kind of family reunions to just really sit back and enjoy it,” she said.
