Authorities investigating cause of fatal house fire in Marlborough

MARLBOROUGH A 62-year-old woman is dead after a one-alarm fire Wednesday morning at a Nolan Way home, authorities said.

Authorities have not identified the victim, other than that she lived at 66 Nolan Way.

"On behalf of the Marlborough Fire Department, I want to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family that lost a loved one this morning," Fire Chief Kevin Breen said in a press release.

Firefighters responded to the home at 8:23 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls. Upon arrival, they found heavy flames coming from a rear corner of the home.

"Firefighters immediately made entry to attack the fire and search for occupants," Breen said in the release. "They located one adult deceased inside; the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of the person's death."

Investigators believe fire started in the first-floor living room

The woman was found on the second floor of the two-story home, which was built 11 years ago. The home is owned by Christopher and Karen Bartlett, and was last assessed at $595,800, according to the City Assessor's Office database.

The Hudson and Southborough fire departments provided mutual aid, while Northborough provided station coverage. It took about 15 minutes to get the majority of the fire knocked down and it was declared under control in about 30 minutes.

The home is currently uninhabitable, with one resident displaced, according to the press release.

"Based on witness statements and an examination of the scene, investigators believe the fire began on the first floor living room," according to the release. "The exact cause remains under investigation."

The fire is being investigated by the Marlborough Fire and Police departments, Massachusetts State Police and the state Fire Marshal's Office.
