Austrian ex-secret service agent detained on suspicion of spying for Russia - Der Standard
A former agent of the Austrian Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight against Terrorism (BVT), Egisto Ott, has been detained on suspicion of spying for Russia, the Austrian newspaper Der Standard reported on March 31.
Austrian law enforcement agencies have been investigating Ott, who is currently being held in a remand center, since 2017, looking into charges of abuse of office, secret intelligence that harmed Austria, and violation of official secrets.
The arrest followed information that Ott had provided Russian spies with the contents of high-ranking officials' cell phones.
His former son-in-law, who allegedly facilitated the crime, was also arrested. The homes of both detainees were searched.
Ott's previous involvement with Jan Marsalek, a former Wirecard board member, has also come to light. He allegedly helped Marsalek set up a spy cell for Russia within BVT. The BVT has since been disbanded.
