Augusta County and Waynesboro to begin budget working sessions

VERONA – Augusta County Board of Supervisors Budget Work session will be held on March 25. The session is expected to have extra eyes this year due to the 54% average reassessment increase, when compared to the last assessment five years ago.

Previously, The News Leader dug through the sales data driving the assessment value spike, before the assessments were mailed out. Last week, the Augusta County Board of Supervisors addressed the 54% average assessment increase before Monday’s appeal deadline.

Similar to Augusta County, Waynesboro City Council will meet on March 20 to hear the city manager's budget presentation..

CAPSAW to consider giving out grant funds

FISHERSVILLE  – Community Action Program Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro (CAPSAW) will consider new funding requests recommended by its Community Support Committee. The committee recommended $2,000 for both requests:

  • Valley Hope's requested help with paying for an office relocation. According to the application, the organization "unexpectedly found out at the end of the year that we were losing the space due to a change in landlord and plans for the building." The new location will double the previous rent for the office space from $1,000 to $2,000 and the new spaces needs $10,000 worth of renovations to ensure client privacy.

  • Rugged Hands Outreach has requested funds for an $8,800 new plumbing job for a local home. The application notes the "family is on disability and the service referral came from the Department of Social Services."

Aviation Technology Park Entrance Road project continues

WEYERS CAVE – The Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport Commission will continue work on the Aviation Technology Park Entrance Road. The commission will also enter a closed session to discuss potential employees, potential real estate acquisition, and "a prospective business or industry or the expansion of an existing business or industry where no previous announcement has been made of the business' or industry's interest in locating or expanding its facilities in the community."

Will Waynesboro Planning Commission recommend new City Code amendments?

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Planning Commission will hold six public hearings, considering Waynesboro City Code amendments, a private street permit, and the demolition of a shed in the historic district. A hearing will be held on each of the following:

  • An amendment to City Code to require either 0.25 or 0.5 parking spaces of guest parking per townhouse unit and to allow outdoor parking areas to include the area between the street and principle structure. (Zoning Ordinance Chapter 98, Article 5.1.3.F. Parking Ratio Requirements and Article 4.2.5. Townhouses.)

  • Public hearing on an City Code amendment to change the required vegetative buffer for parking lot landscaping adjacent to residential districts from a Class C to a Class B buffer along with allowing the substitution of a wall, fence, or berm complying with Sec. 98-5.4.5.B.4. for the other buffer requirements. (City Code chapter 98, Article 5.4.7.)

  • Public hearing on a City Code amendment to add the word “structure” where applicable and add exemption language for signs and fences. (City Code chapter 98, Article 4.6.2. Accessory Buildings)

  • Public hearing on a City Code amendment to correct Part C.2(a) to state that temporary structures are those that are erected for 179 days or less rather. (City Code chapter 98, 4.4.11 Temporary Special Events)

  • A conditional use permit request by Zakary Draego to allow for a private street in the RG-5 (General Residential) District at 1416 Peach Street.

  • A certificate of appropriateness request by William K. Cromwell to demolish a non-contributing structure in the Tree Streets Historic District. The structure is a small shed in the rear of the property located at 677 Walnut Avenue.
