Augusta Regional holds Terminal Area Plan Open House

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Augusta Regional Airport presenting a new plan to improve the overall experience for people who fly in and out of the Garden City.

After the pandemic, airport staff worked to make sure passenger experience and airport performance is at its best. That’s the reason for the new terminal area plan.

“The airport is almost fully recovered from the pandemic. Passengers are back and things are growing and the airport is trying to get ahead of that growth through this terminal planning process,” Project Manager for TAP with Mead & Hunt Consulting Ryan Hayes said.

The plan was unveiled at an open house Wednesday morning. Its goal is to develop short and long-term plans to accommodate current needs and anticipated growth.

“None of the improvements have been designed yet. They’ve just been planned, and this is an opportunity for the public to comment on what those plans might look like,” Hayes said.

It all began in Fall of 2022 when Augusta Regional received millions of dollars in a federal fund grant.

“The bipartisan infrastructure, we were able to get the grant funding for those bridges. So, we’re very happy to be able to get those,” airport Assistant Director of Marketing & Public Relations Lauren Smith said.

Those new jet bridges being one of the airport’s biggest and latest improvements.

“Rehabilitation for gates three and four. So, what that means to the passengers, and what they’ll see is a larger footprint in our gate area. And the most exciting part: two additional jet bridges. So, there should be no more ground boarding at Augusta when you’re flying through,” Smith said.

Airport staff say the best review is satisfied passenger experience.

“We’re continuing to always have a project. Right now, I think we have five or six in the works right now, and as you can see behind me, we have big plans for our airport. We want to be the main airport of choice in our community. We don’t want people to think about going to Atlanta or Columbia, or Charlotte when we have all the amenities and the flights that they want, here in Augusta,” Smith said.
