Attempted riot stopped at Otero County jail

OTERO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The Otero County Detention Center says eight detainees tried to incite a riot on Tuesday evening. The jail’s director says the inmates barricaded themselves on the second floor of a maximum security unit for several hours after one of them was disciplined for threatening staff.

The jail says the inmates were armed with makeshift weapons and set fires to brooms. Law enforcement quelled the disturbance around 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
