We asked for your opinions on the Wisconsin state flag. Here's what you told us

Over the weekend, Minnesota unveiled its new state flag. It features a stylized outline of the state with an eight-pointed star and a field of light blue.

Minnesota joins other states that have made changes to their flags in recent years. Meanwhile, Wisconsin hasn't updated its flag in decades. So we decided to ask Wisconsinites what they think about the state flag and whether it's time for a change.

Since Monday, we've received more than 200 responses. Here's a sampling of what readers told us.

Readers were asked to tell the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel how they think the Wisconsin state flag should be redesigned. Here's what they said (with small tweaks made for punctuation and capitalization).

  • "Similar to Minnesota, make it a symbol in itself rather than a seal on the background," said Adam in Columbus.

  • "It should be dramatically changed and modernized," said Jeff in Milwaukee.

  • "Simplify and modernize. Like the flags of TX and now MN, our flag should be easily recognizable and reflect the unique identity of WI," said Tim in Madison.

  • "Updated professions and technology, and more simplicity. Include the Great Lake Michigan reference or color blue and add a reference to honest and fair government and keep the state of Wisconsin wording on the flag," said Mary Jo in Milwaukee.

  • "I would like a complete overhaul. Redesign the flag from scratch," said Stephen in Madison.

  • "It should be unique and interesting instead of a seal on a blue background," said Garth in Milwaukee.

  • "It's too cluttered. It needs to be simplified. There should be some meaning behind this simplification. The best flags are simple, yet somehow make a statement in terms of color, design or some combination. Most people are totally unaware of what the objects and people on the current flag are. You know there is a problem when the actual name of the state has to be placed on the flag," said Andy in Prairie du Sac.

Some readers believe the state flag should not be changed or weren't sure

  • "No change. We spend enough money for our legislators to bicker back and forth about main issues. Spending money to have them bicker about a change is useless," said Rich in Milwaukee.

  • "I am of the admittedly rare opinion that our flag is alright as it is, and that this flag reform movement is mostly a fad. I wouldn't mind a change to the flag that would retain the coat of arms, which I quite like, however," said Jason in Milwaukee.

  • "It's ugly but not offensive. It can certainly be improved but trying to will further antagonize people who are scared of changed and push them toward Trump," said Derek in Milwaukee.

  • "If we have a pictorial including people removed from their property like MN, my answer would be yes, replace. There is nothing offensive I'm aware of with the current flag," said Paul in Eagle River, and a former Milwaukee resident.
