Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis can thank timing and good fortune for their beautiful marriage. The actor looked back on the beginning stages of his romance with Kunis, and explained how their relationship dynamic evolved through the decades.

While starring on That ‘70s Show together, Kutcher had no interest in Kunis because of the age gap. (Kutcher was 19 years old while Kunis was 14.) The five-year age gap, however, benefited Kunis in another way: The actor would help his co-star complete her chemistry homework.

“I think I was her first kiss, like, on the show,” Kutcher told Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show this week. “It was really weird. I was like, ‘Isn’t this illegal?’ It was really awkward. She was 14! She was like my little sister. I wanted to make sure she was okay.”

“She said she didn’t think you were particularly good looking when she was 14,” Stern replied.

“She’s lying! She has like, a journal or like, a diary from when she was a kid where she wrote, ‘Oh, this guy’s hot,'” Kutcher replied. “At first I think she thought that I was good looking, and then shortly after, I was just annoying to her, because I was like a big brother.”

Years passed and the two remained friends. Kutcher eventually married actress Demi Moore, while Kunis remained in a longterm relationship with Macaulay Culkin. As fans know, both relationships ended for different reasons, and Kunis and Kutcher ran into each other randomly backstage at an awards show.

The actor figured the Black Swan beauty would a good match for one his friends, so he invited her to a house party with the intention to set them up. But his friend didn’t show and Kutcher and Kunis hooked up instead that night.

“It was pretty mutual. It was kind of obvious that things were happening,” the Friends With Benefits actor told Stern.

Still, Kunis wasn’t convinced. “She’s like, ‘You’re not ready to be in a relationship’ and I’m like, ‘I’m not ready to be a in a relationship,’” Kutcher recalled. “It was funny because I’d just done this movie called No Strings Attached and she just did a movie called Friends with Benefits and we legitimately lived out our movies, which was virtually the same movie.”

Kunis corroborated Kutcher’s claims last July in a separate interview with Stern. “I think we both had to go through a lot in our lives to become the people that we were. Because we would never be together based on the people we used to be,” the actress said.

After a few months of a casual fling, Kunis decided she needed more. “I was like, ‘This isn’t fun anymore,’” she told Stern. “We were incredibly open with each other with regards to where we were with our feelings. When I realized when I was nervous was when I spoke to him.”

The couple ultimately married in 2014. They share two adorable children, a little girl named Wyatt and their recently born son Dimitri.
