Сase opened against nightclub in Russia for "extremist LGBT activities"

In the Russian city of Orenburg, the management of the Poza (Pose) club was accused of "extremist LGBT activities", and criminal proceedings were opened.

Source: Russian media with reference to Ekaterina Mizulina, the head of the Safe Internet League, created to censor the internet in Russia.

Mizulina says a criminal case has been opened "on the grounds of extremist activities related to the Posa LGBT club" (Article 282.2.1-2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

"This is the first such criminal case in Russia since the Supreme Court's decision recognising LGBT people as an extremist movement", says Mizulina.

The Russian Safe Internet League was created to "fight prohibited content on the web."

The Russian media, in particular, the Russian propaganda news agency TASS, wrote that the club visitors told law enforcement officers that the club was allegedly promoting the "LGBT extremist movement" banned in Russia.

Background:

  • In November 2023, the Supreme Court of Russia recognised "the international public movement LGBT+ as an extremist organisation and banned its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation.
