Area news in brief for April 22

MAIN STREET FUNDRAISER – Main Street Alliance plans a fundraiser to coincide with the Final Friday celebration downtown in the Carnation City. The fundraiser will run 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at Sisters Social, 253 E. Main St. Diners will enjoy special dishes and spirits, in addition to a performance from Stratford Kings. Tickets are $20 per person at the door. Fifteen percent of proceeds will go to Main Street Alliance. Guest bartenders on hand will be Niki McIlvain, Faye Roller and Dalton R. Kline. Final Fridays also will play host to events related to the event, with a sidewalk sale planned.

LOUISVILLE ARBOR DAY – Louisville Tree Commission plans its annual Arbor Day celebration at 11 a.m. April 27 at the Doughboy Statue, 215 S. Mill St. at Gorgas Street.

MINERVA CHAMBER – Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce’s 41st annual dinner and Community Salute Awards will be May 8 at the Minerva Community Building. Speaker for the event will be Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a cash bar, followed at 6:30 p.m. by a buffet dinner, catered by Kishman’s IGA. The program will be at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $40 for Minerva Chamber members and their guests, and $45 for nonmembers. RSVPs are due by May 1. ROXY BLUES SHOW – Minerva’s Roxy Theatre, 114 N. Market St., will play host to blues artist Shaun Booker and the Dammit Band on May 25. The Youngstown native has toured extensively throughout Europe and South America, performing at major venues and festivals. Tickets are $25 each, or $45 for VIP seating, and can be purchased at the Minerva Chamber office, 203 N. Market St., or at the shortened link, shorturl.at/hy479. POTWARE COLLECTION – StarkFresh, a Canton-based nonprofit with a grocery store in Alliance, is collecting gently used cookware during Earth Week, which runs Monday through Friday this week. StarkFresh will accept anything that still has use left in it. Organizers say those donating should ask themselves if they would use it in their own kitchen. Donated cookware will be cleaned, organized and available to community members and organizations in need. Cookware can be dropped off at either StarkFresh Grocery Store location – The Commons in Alliance, at 405 S. Linden Ave.; and at 321 Cherry Ave. NE in Canton. Dropoff hours in Alliance are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Dropoff hours in Canton are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

CHOIR CONCERT – University of Mount Union Concert Choir, Cantus, Kantorei and Voce Bassa, under the direction of Beth Polen, will present a spring concert entitled “Homecomin’” at 7:30 p.m. April 26-27 in Brush Performance Hall of the Giese Center for the Performing Arts. The show will include pieces by Kyle Pederson, Moira Smiley, Grace Coberly and Shawn Kirchner, among others. Amy Haines will serve as collaborative pianist. The show is free and open to the public. SEBRING COUNCIL – Sebring Village Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Village Hall. On the agenda is discussion of a 2-mill levy for police protection; a 1-mill renewal levy for recreation; and a 2-mill additional levy to fund operation of parks and recreation. The board also will discuss participation in the 2024 ODOT road salt program.

ALLIANCE PRESERVATION – City of Alliance Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the City Administration Building, 504 E. Main St., in the second-floor conference room.

WEST BRANCH – West Branch Local Schools Board of Education plans meetings Wednesday at West Branch High School’s Media Room, 14277 S. Main St. in Beloit. The board will have a work session to go over agenda items at 5:30 p.m., and 6 p.m. for the regular meeting.
