From the Archives: May 25 in the Pioneer

May 25—May 25, 2014 — This year's annual Ride for the Troops will honor one of its co-founders, Ken Donaghue, who died in a motorcycle accident earlier this year. The event has been ongoing for nine years and raises funds to help troops and their families both during deployment and following soldiers' returns.

May 25, 1999 — Forests across Minnesota have been impacted by a high population of forest tent caterpillars, frequently called armyworms, this year, which have been eating the newly formed leaves of trees. While Beltrami County hasn't been affected as badly as other counties, the impact has still been higher than in previous years.

May 25, 1974 — The Mississippi Headwaters Blood Bank is encouraging local residents to consider donating blood, sharing that the need is constant and the results can save a life. An estimated 1,700 volunteers in the area give blood each year, but more are required to keep up with the demand.

May 25, 1924 — With the end of the school year fast approaching, seniors at Bemidji High School are preparing for their graduation. Rehearsals are underway for the upcoming senior play, with the community invited to attend, and the commencement ceremony has many talented speakers planned.
