From the Archives: May 1 in the Pioneer

May 1—May 1, 2014 — Red Lake Nation is taking steps to preserve the Ojibwe language, with sessions on the language included as a part of the 9th annual Red Lake Youth Leadership Conference. Students at Red Lake High School, where the conference was hosted, participated in the sessions, speaking the language and discussing its importance.

May 1, 1999 — The 26th annual powwow was held at Bemidji State University by the Council of Indian Students, with young dancers from across the state and across the region attending and competing in several categories. Dancers from North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Canada were able to enjoy the event.

May 1, 1974 — Fifth-grade students at J.W. Smith Elementary School earned 78 saplings through their efforts during Earth Week where they collected just over 780 aluminum cans to be recycled. The saplings will be planted both on school grounds and sent home with students' families.

May 1, 1924 — A number of children, appropriately dressed for the occasion, will open the May Day dance staged by the Ralph Gracie post of the American Legion. The opening will feature a festively decorated May Pole that the children will frolic around, followed by other entertainment suitable for all ages.
