APS announces change to last day of school for students

May 20—Albuquerque Public Schools will finish the school year on May 31, and this year, the semester will finish out with a full day of classes.

"This change comes in response to a new state law mandating 1,140 hours of instruction for all New Mexico students," APS's website said.

Commenters on the district's Facebook post expressed frustration at the decision, saying the full day will have a negative impact on teachers.

"Elementary teachers will have no time without students to pack up their rooms," said one comment.

Another commenter said the full day was a good idea, saying it would keep kids from spending too much time watching TV or playing games on their phones.

Students attending Transformational Opportunity Pilot Schools, also known as TOPS, will have their last day June 10, and it will also be a full day.
