April 27 election: St. Gabriel to pick new council member, Iberville voters will decide taxes

IBERVILLE PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) — Voters in Iberville Parish have several ballot items to track in the municipal general election on Saturday, April 27.

The St. Gabriel council race is a runoff between Okedria Smith and Randall Johnson. Both are Democrats.

Also, voters must decide on two fire protection district taxes and a proposition for the 18th Judicial Enforcement District.

Polls will be open from 7 am. to 8 p.m. Saturday. More information can be found on the Louisiana Secretary of State’s website.

In previous election news, Yolanda Holmes, Democrat, was chosen as the new District G school board representative during the March 23 primary.

What do the tax proposals support?

Fire Protection District No. 1 Proposition (Tax Renewal)

Can the Fire Protection District No. 1 keep levying a 3.95-mill property tax from 2026 to 2035? Approximately $338,000 is estimated to be collected each year. Funds will be used “for the purpose of continuing the maintenance, operation and capital expenditures necessary to operate the fire protection district facilities and to obtain water for its protection.”

Fire Protection District No. 2 Proposition (Tax Renewal)

Can the Fire Protection District No. 2 keep levying a 6.78-mill property tax from 2025 to 2034? Approximately $80,000 is estimated to be collected each year. Funds will be used for “financing the maintenance, operation and capital expenditures necessary to operate the fire protection service throughout the District.”

18th Judicial Enforcement District Proposition (Sales Tax)

Iberville, Pointe Coupee and West Baton Rouge parishes

Can the 18th Judicial Enforcement District collect a 0.25% sales tax, for a period of 10 years, starting July 1, 2024? Around $8.2 million is expected to be collected annually. Funds will be used for “the purpose of providing funding for the offices of the District Attorney for Iberville, West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee Parishes.”
