Applicants vying for vacant Greene Co. school board seat

GREENE COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) – Former Greene County Board of Education member Tom Cobble sent in his resignation letter in early April, but his term is not set to end until August.

Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison said when a school board member resigns or passes away before the end of their term, it becomes a job for county commissioners to fill the vacant seat.

“The gathering of information for the county commission is in our office,” said Morrison. “It becomes the repository for the resumes and the letters of desire to serve in that role, so we’re collecting that information.”

Morrison told News Channel 11 that so far, he has received five applications or resumes from those interested in the position.

“By the time that the meeting rolls around, we’re probably going to have somewhere short of a dozen interested parties that think that they would like to serve and give back to the community as a school board member,” said Morrison.

Former Greene Co. school board member under investigation will be replaced in May

Greene County commissioners will be presented with all the applications and resumes of potential candidates to replace Cobble during the commission’s next meeting on May 20. Commissioners will vote for the best candidate, and that person will be sworn in immediately.

“If you live in that district or reside in that district (of Greene County) and you desire to give back to your community, you feel you are uniquely qualified too and care about education, then you’re more than qualified to just submit a resume and serve,” said Morrison.

Morrison said it takes a majority vote of 11 commissioners to decide the best person for the job.

In his resignation letter, Cobble cited declining health as his reason for leaving the school board. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed that it was investigating allegations made against Cobble, but no further details as to the nature of those allegations has been released.
