Blue Apron and Hello Fresh better hold on to their spatulas, because the ever-expanding meal kit world is about to explode. Weeks after Amazon acquired Whole Foods, the Seattle-based company has already begun implementing steps toward a complete food industry takeover.

As of July 6, Amazon owned the trademark to a service with the description "We do the prep. You be the chef." The service intends to give customers "prepared food kits ... ready for cooking and assembly as a meal," based on the trademark application.

While that's fairly straightforward, there was no word on when the rumored food kits would become available on the site. If that bums you out, not to fear - it looks like they'll be available soon, because some people apparently already have access to them.

Seattle resident Josh Chadd gave GeekWire (via Business Insider) the exclusive on what appears to be Amazon's new meal kits. While the site's meal kit page didn't show any options for sale, Chadd said he first noticed them appear as an option in late June and tried a few of the meals.

The service reportedly offers 17 different dishes, including recipes for Steak au Poivre with parmesan fries, Tacos al Pastor with pork, Wagyu Beef Burger with Bacon Jam, and Roast Chicken with Tarragon-Mushroom sauce. Each kit comes with enough ingredients to serve two and costs around $20. Vegetarian options, like the Veggie Burger with Harissa Aoili and Smoked Eggplant, are the cheapest at $15.99.

The ingredients come individually packaged, similar to Blue Apron, and each meal has detailed instructions on what to do with every ingredient provided. The perks of this meal kits when compared to others is that you don't need a subscription - or at least not yet.

Amazon already offers some meal kits in partnership with other companies, like Tyson Tastemakers or Martha & Marley Spoon, but none of them are directly from Amazon. Either way, this little taste of the future has everyone speculating on when the service will be available nationwide.
