APD selects 15-year Abilene officer Joel Harris to serve as 3rd assistant chief of police

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Abilene Police Department (APD) announced a third Assistant Chief of APD on Thursday.

Asst. Chief Joel Harris has been with APD since November 2008, working his way up from patrol officer to sergeant in 2018, and lieutenant in 2023.

He also spent time in APD’s Criminal Investigations Division as a detective, a sniper on the SWAT team, a member of the Crisis Negotiations Team, was part of the School Resource Officer program, served as the Bike Unit Commander, and even more accolades.

“Lieutenant Harris distinguished himself through his exemplary leadership, integrity, and vision for the future of the Abilene Police Department. His demonstrated ability to inspire and empower others, coupled with his unwavering dedication to our mission, makes him the ideal candidate to help lead us into the next chapter of our journey,” Chief Ron Seratte wrote in a press release.

Abilene PD changes hiring process in hopes to fully staff with officers

Asst. Chief Harris joins assistant chiefs Craig Jordan and Ritchie Waggoner, and Chief Seratte to lead the Abilene Police Department. He was chosen through an “extensive” process after Asst. Chief Doug Wrenn retired earlier this year.
