COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Good Friday is a day of remembrance for Catholics around the world. Friday in downtown Columbus there was a walk to memorialize the crucifixion of Jesus.

“It came about in the early 50’s, 60’s with Father Luigi Giussani,” said sponsor Dr. Holly Peterson. “I’ve done this for many, many years and as you’re walking by sometimes people cross themselves, cars will stop. Hopefully we’re a sign, a sign of something beautiful and something great, who is Christ who loves us.”

Starting at the Saint Joseph Cathedral, through scripture and song, over a hundred people of all ages participated in “Good Friday Meditations on the Way of the Cross.”

“You see people from all different walks of life, from different nationalities here and that’s somethin beautiful about the Catholic church is its universality but at the same time you offer salvation for every man and woman and every race and tribe and every country and nation,” said Bishop Earl Fernandes.

The way of the cross happens in the heart of the city where millions of people carry their daily crosses

“As I walk the streets I’m thinking about what it means that Jesus saved me,” said participant Emma Greve. “So, it’s a really beautiful experience for me to get to pray walking in the city.”
