Amtrak Borealis train service to make inaugural run, Wisconsin’s first passenger rail expansion in 22 years

(WFRV) – Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced that the new Amtrak Borealis train service is making its first run through Wisconsin and some of its neighboring states on Tuesday.

According to a release, the Borealis train is making its first trip across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, making it Wisconsin’s first passenger rail expansion in the last 22 years.

WisDOT officials say the state-sponsored train now doubles the amount of passenger rail options that connect Wisconsin to Chicago and Minnesota’s Twin Cities.

The train’s daily round-trip route is scheduled to stop at and serve the following eight stations in Wisconsin:

  • La Crosse

  • Tomah

  • Wisconsin Dells

  • Portage

  • Columbus

  • Milwaukee

  • Milwaukee airport

  • Sturtevant

WisDOT officials say each station will have its own celebration events throughout the day as the train moves along its route.
