Amity Township receives $20.4 million state loan to upgrade wastewater plant

Apr. 25—Amity Township has been awarded a $20.4 million loan from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority to upgrade and expand its wastewater treatment plant.

Gov. Josh Shapiro announced this week the investment of $274 million for 30 drinking water, wastewater and stormwater projects across 22 counties through the infrastructure investment authority. The projects include replacing lead or other corrosive pipes, rehabilitating aging systems, upgrading service capabilities, extending service to more communities and reducing environmental contaminants through compliance with current regulatory levels and best practices.

"My administration is focused on protecting public health and the environment across the commonwealth — and these investments will help to uphold Pennsylvanians' constitutional right to clean air and pure water," Shapiro said in a release.

Amity Township will use the loan to make improvements to its wastewater treatment plant. System upgrades include the replacement of a grit removal system and pumps as well as the installation of new equipment. This goal of the project is to improve water treatment that impacts the Schuylkill River and bring the plant into compliance with regulatory limits.
