Despite their very vocal support of free speech, it turns out a lot of Republicans are very happy to hand over the media to Donald Trump.

A new poll has shown how much trust of the media has eroded among Trump's fanbase, after he has repeatedly referred to journalists as "enemies of the people" and use of the term "fake news" to describe news he doesn't like.

The Ipsos poll found that more than 4 in 10 Republicans want to give Trump the power to shut down the media and has found that nearly half (48 per cent) of Republicans agree "the news media is the enemy of the American people".

The poll of more than 1,000 American adults highlights the disparity between Republicans and Democrats opinion of the media. 80 per cent of Republicans, compared to 23 per cent of Democrats, agreed with the statement that "most news outlets have a liberal bias"

It also found 79 per cent of Republicans believe that "the mainstream media treats President Trump unfairly" compared to 11 per cent of Democrats.

The poll results found that 85 per cent of respondents said "freedom of the press is essential for American Democracy". However a surprising 12 per cent of Democrats also agreed that news media is "the enemy of the people" showing the public trust in the media has fallen throughout the political spectrum.
