Alliance woman dies after early-morning fire sweeps through her home

ALLIANCE ‒ A 74-year-old woman died early Monday after being injured by smoke and heat in a fire at her home at 367 North Lincoln Ave.

Daisy S. Sharkey was pronounced dead at 2:08 a.m. at Alliance Community Hospital, said Harry Campbell, chief investigator for the Stark County Coroner's Office.

Firefighters were called around 1:30 a.m., according to a Facebook post from Alliance Professional Firefighters Local 480.

"It was relayed via dispatch that there was someone trapped inside the home," it said. "Upon arrival there was fire in the front area of the home and heavy smoke and heat throughout."

Firefighters entered through the back breezeway and found the victim inside the home. They removed her through the back door. They started CPR and other life-saving measures.

"While waiting for the arrival of (an ambulance), members placed the victim on a backboard and heart monitor," the firefighters' post said. "The victim was rushed to Alliance Hospital and unfortunately succumbed to her injuries from the smoke and heat. Our thoughts are with the family."

The Division of State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.

The Alliance Police Department and the Lexington Township Fire Department assisted.

Online records of the Stark County Auditor's Office say the wood-frame house was built in 1951.
