Alice Stewart, a CNN political commentator who previously worked on multiple GOP presidential campaigns, is dead at 58.

During the early morning hours of Saturday, May 18, Stewart's body was found outside in the neighborhood of Belle View, Va., CNN reported. Law enforcement officers believe she experienced a medical emergency; no foul play is suspected.

“Alice was a very dear friend and colleague to all of us at CNN,” the network's CEO, Mark Thompson, wrote in a staff email. “A political veteran and an Emmy Award-winning journalist who brought an incomparable spark to CNN’s coverage, known across our bureaus not only for her political savvy, but for her unwavering kindness. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn such an extraordinary loss.”

CNN's Jessica Dean reported Stewart's death on the network on Saturday evening.

"She's been a staple on this network, participating in many political panels, bringing us deep insight into politics," Dean shared. "You'll remember she was a former communications director for Sen. Ted Cruz. She worked with Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, just to name a few."

Additionally, Stewart hosted a podcast called Hot Mics From Left to Right, with her friend and Democratic strategist, Maria Cardona. She also served as a member of Harvard's Institute of Politics Senior Advisory Committee.

"Alice and I both got our start in Arkansas television in local news. And when I was coming up as an intern, she was working there. And as we both made our way to CNN, she was always available with an encouraging smile or a text as I climbed my way up the ladder here," Dean added. "And I know that, personally, I miss her very much, and I'm very sad to hear this news."

In the wake of Stewart's death, many took to social media to react to the news. Cruz wrote via X (formerly Twitter), "⁦Alice was wonderful and talented and a dear friend. And she loved America fiercely. She lived every day to the fullest, and she will be deeply missed. May God’s comfort and peace be upon her loved ones. RIP."

Former CNN contributor Keith Boykin wrote on X, "I’m shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of @CNN political commentator Alice Stewart. Alice and I worked together at CNN for years, and she was my favorite Republican. We disagreed on nearly every issue, but she was always civil and respectful. May she rest in peace."

Meanwhile, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie wrote via X, "I am stunned and saddened by the news of Alice Stewart’s passing. She was a political pro and a wonderfully nice person to just have a conversation with on any topic. I will miss Alice and will pray for her family."
