Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is taking a lot of heat for leaving Texas to take a trip to Cancún with his family. Meanwhile, other Washington leaders, including Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, have been stepping in to do their part to help Texas.
AOC traveled to Texas Saturday to help with relief efforts after Winter Storm Uri left millions without electricity and many still without safe drinking water. Through ActBlue, AOC helped raise $4 million for local organizations helping Texans who need assistance during this crisis.
Alright Houston!
We need some helping hands. The Houston Food Bank (one of our relief partners) needs volunteers tomorrow (and onward, I imagine) to help get supplies to Texans in need.
We’ll be there. If you’d like to join and help, @LaCongresista’s got the link to sign up ⬇️ https://t.co/URVZGJdL0T— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 19, 2021
AOC teamed up with Texas Reps. Sylvia Garcia and Sheila Jackson Lee, who all helped fill boxes at the Houston Food Bank, one of their fundraising partners, to go to those in need. They took this video with other volunteers who were on the ground to help with the boxing efforts:
We hit $3.2 MILLION in Texas relief support last night!
One of the places it’s going is the Houston Food Bank. I’m visiting Reps. @JacksonLeeTX18 & @LaCongresista with volunteers to pack meals.
The bank REALLY needs helping hands.

"We just hit $4 million!," AOC tweeted on Saturday afternoon. "Reps. Sylvia Garcia, Sheila Jackson Lee & Al Green of Houston are doing incredible work w/ local relief organizations to get emergency relief to Texans. Today we went to food distributions, water delivery sites, and home tours of impacted Texans."

The congresswoman from New York started fundraising efforts on Feb. 18, and by 9:17 p.m. had already hit $1 million.
Wow.
We officially raised $1 million for Texas relief at 9:17pm.
Thank you all so much. 🙏🏽 I’m at a loss for words. Always in awe of movement work.
💯% of this relief is going straight to Texan food assistance, homelessness relief, elder care, and more. https://t.co/DSkTSqfbkZ— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 19, 2021
Texas's Beto O'Rourke has also been helping with on-the-ground fundraising efforts and has been posting other ways people can help Texans who need resources, such as clean drinking water.

"You know, we're from Texas right?" Garcia told reporters Saturday of AOC's efforts, per NPR. "Who does things with New York? We always kind of make fun of New York. But this time we love New York."
