New alert system for steam electric plant

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Many people from our region are familiar with the sirens that go off for testing and alert at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Plant in the Berwick Area.

The time has come for change FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security are proposing changing sirens with cell phone alerts.

Officials ran a test on Thursday and Friday and opened the idea up for public comment. With a meeting at the Talen Energy East Mountain Business Center in Plains Township.

“We received an application from the PA Emergency Management Agency to change the notification for the Susquehanna Steam Electric station the proposed new system involves FEMA integrating the public alert warning system and emergency broadcast messages. We are seeing moderation on alert systems across the country,” explained Thomas Scardino from FEMA.

If it goes through the new system without sirens will go online in October.
