Alabama Primary Runoff Election: April 16, 2024 — Voter’s Guide

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Voters are set to go to the polls Tuesday morning to vote in the Alabama Primary Runoffs. Here’s what you need to know before voting.

General Election Information

The April 16 election continues the March 5 primaries. The top two candidates from the Republican and Democratic District 2 races will compete in the runoff.

Since no Republican or Democratic candidates in District 2’s primaries won a majority, they are set for a runoff.

According to Ballotpedia, “Nine states conduct runoff elections as part of their party nomination process. These runoffs occur when no candidate reaches the required threshold for victory.”

Polling Places

Polls for this election will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16.

To find where to vote, visit the Secretary of State’s website. Once there, eligible voters can enter their first and last names and their birthdates to generate the address and location of their polling place.

Voting along Party Lines

Since it is a runoff, polling regulations differ for those who voted in the primary and those who did not.

According to a flow chart provided by the Alabama Elections Division, those who voted in the primary election must vote for candidates in the same party.

Specifically, those who voted in the Democratic Primary must vote in the Democratic Runoff and those who voted in the Republican Primary must vote in the Republican Runoff.

Those who did not vote in the primary can vote in whichever party’s runoff of their choosing.
