Alabama Department of Public Health to analyze more maternal deaths through autopsy program

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The Alabama Department of Public Health is looking to gain more insight into the cause of maternal deaths through the implementation of the Maternal Autopsy Program, and Mobile pathology centers and coroners are helping the cause.

Officials say the implementation of the Maternal Autopsy Program is important given Alabama’s maternal mortality rate.

“Alabama’s maternal mortality rate is one of the highest in the nation, and it is hoped that this new program will help gain greater insight into the cause of maternal deaths,” an ADPH release said.

The problem with gaining greater insight, according to officials, is not enough detailed information.

“Obtaining the most detailed and accurate information is critical in making determinations regarding maternal deaths and reducing maternal mortality in Alabama,” the release said. “Approximately 50 percent of all maternal deaths do not have an autopsy performed.”

To get more information to help in understanding and ultimately preventing maternal deaths, ADPH has implemented the Maternal Autopsy Program in partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham Pathology Department and the University of South Alabama Department of Pathology.

Coroners in Baldwin, Jefferson, Madison, Marshal, Mobile, Montgomery, Shelby and Walker counties participate in the Maternal Autopsy Program, according to the release.

Through this program, family members of women who died during pregnancy or up to a year after delivery are offered a complete autopsy free of charge if there is no one to perform the autopsy in the area, or they cannot afford one.
