Air quality alert issued in southeast Michigan for Saturday

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) has issued an air quality alert for increased ozone in southeast Michigan on Saturday.

The alert is expected to be in effect for Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties all day Saturday, with higher ozone levels during the mid-afternoon to early evening hours, that will bring the air quality index (AQI) within the orange, or "unhealthy for sensitive groups," range.

The EGLE recommends that individuals in the affected counties avoid strenuous outdoor activities when possible, especially if they suffer from respiratory diseases like asthma.

Other pollutants, such as PM2.5 that filled the smoggy skies over metro Detroit during the Canadian wildfires last summer, are expected to remain moderate. Check your local air quality index here.

Following anticipated showers Friday evening, Saturday's weather conditions are expected to be sunny with a light breeze and a high of 79 degrees in the day and a low of 58 degrees in the evening.
