AFD responds to fire with ‘multiple explosions’

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Fire Department said it was responding to reports of a structure fire with “multiple explosions” Friday morning near east Austin.

AFD said there were reports of a disturbance inside a home in the 4600 block of Imperial Drive “associated with multiple explosions, fire and smoke” inside.

Austin Fire said crews responded at approximately 10:05 a.m. for a medical call, but when crews arrived, the house was on fire. There were several flammable items, such as propane, that exploded at the scene, according to AFD.

A total of 45 firefighters responded to the scene, according to the department.

According to AFD, the fire was out, and crews were working to search the structure “for life inside,” as well as removing boards from windows to ventilate the structure.

AFD said multiple patients with injuries “unrelated to the fire” were in the care of Austin-Travis County EMS at the scene.

One ATCEMS patient with minor burns to the face was taken from the scene and another person was treated at the scene.

ATCEMS said one adult was taken to a local trauma center with potentially serious, traumatic injuries.

AFD also said Austin Energy has also responded to the scene.

As this is an active scene, AFD said people should avoid the area. A fire investigator was also reported to be en route to the scene.

The cause of the fire was currently undetermined, and AFD said the investigation was ongoing.
