ADPH issues annual update on fish consumption advisories

ALABAMA (WHNT) – The Alabama Department of Public Health has issued its annual update on fish advisory consumption based on data that the Alabama Department of Environmental Management collected.

In the fall of 2023, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and ADEM went to several different bodies of water in Alabama and collected samples of specific fish species to analyze.

The agencies collected 455 samples from 39 collection stations. The ADPH assessed the analytical results to determine whether any of the tested contaminants gave rise to possible human health effects.

Fish advisories are issued for the specific bodies of water and species taken from those areas. In reservoirs, advisories apply to waters as far as a boat can be taken upstream in a tributary.

Newly issued advisories will be represented as the safe number of meals of that species of fish that can be eaten in a given period of time, such as meals per week, meals per month or do not eat any. A meal portion consists of 6 ounces of cooked fish or 8 ounces of raw fish.

The advisory is offered as guidance to individuals who want to eat the fish they caught from these bodies of water throughout the state. No regulations ban eating any fish caught in Alabama, and there is no risk of an acute toxic episode that would result from eating the fish.

You can find the new and updated consumption advisories issued for the 39 bodies of water that were tested on the ADPH website.
