Active severe weather week; tornado count above normal for this year

More than 1,000 total severe weather reports since Monday, and likely over 100 tornadoes.

*note these reports are preliminary and likely to go up!

To date, the U.S.  tornado count is running about 20% above the long term average

The total since January 1 is around 670 reports of tornadoes which is the highest YTD total since 2017.  In the past 15 years: Only 2017 (704 tornadoes) and 2011 (1,290 tornadoes) have seen more to this point in the year.


Final April tornado tally ranks as the 2nd most on record for April—since 1950—and the greatest total in 13 years!
