Acclaimed Oakland BBQ spot reopening in new location following fire, vandalism

(KRON) — An acclaimed Oakland barbecue restaurant that suffered a devastating fire and vandalism is reopening after earlier indicating it would be closing for good. Horn Barbecue will reopen this Friday as part of owner Matt Horn’s other restaurant Matty’s Old Fashioned in downtown Oakland, according to an announcement from the restaurant.

“As part of the exciting relaunch, Horn Barbecue is delighted to announced the seamless integration of select Matty’s Old Fashioned favorites directly into the Horn Barbecue menu, as the space has transitioned,” read a press release.

“Beginning this Friday, Horn Barbecue will return to serving up its award-winning smoked meats now with a full bar and alongside select favorite dishes from beloved Matty’s Old-Fashioned,” the announcement read. There are also plans to open a Horn Barbecue shop that will cater to the “bustling demand for quick authentic barbecue experience.”

The original Horn Barbecue location on Oakland’s Mandela Parkway was closed five months ago following a fire that devastated the building. The fire broke out shortly after the restaurant posted on social media that it had been vandalized.

Owner Matt Horn blamed the blaze on arson, however KRON4 has not confirmed this.

“The arson that targeted our flagship location was a product of the very environment the city is working to change,” Horn said. “This incident did not destroy our spirit; rather it inspired us to rebuild and continue serving.”

Horn Barbecue has been widely acclaimed in the Bay Area beyond, having been recognized by Michelin and with Horn himself earning Best New Chef honors from “Food & Wine” in 2021.
