Accident claims life week after crash

Mar. 23—An accident in the intersection of Crabtree Road and Paragon Parkway left one injured and took one life a week after the crash.

Don and Sybil Crawford were driving their 2012 Toyota Avalon on Monday, March 11. As they turned left from Crabtree Road on to Paragon Parkway, the couple was hit by an individual driving a 2005 Jeep Cherokee.

Both of the Crawfords were transported to Haywood Regional Medical Center and later to Mission Hospital for injuries.

Don Crawford, 92, passed away from his injuries on Tuesday, March 19.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the accident.

"We're working on the investigation and trying to get more information," Highway Patrol Sgt. Brent Hipp said. "There's still a lot that we have to do with it, with the investigation, because we got some conflicting stories about who had the green light."

The trouble comes from the lack of cameras in the area. The light itself does not have a camera, and there are no nearby businesses that would have a lens trained on that intersection.

"I wouldn't say often, but there are wrecks there," Highway Patrol Sgt. Brandon Miller said.

It is also unclear whether any charges may follow the investigation.

"Ultimately, it's the district attorney's office, but we consult with them," Hipp said. "We have a really good relationship with them."
