Abilene hosts first naturalization ceremony in 20+ years to welcome new Americans

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Thursday marked the first time in more than 20 years that a naturalization ceremony has been held in the Key City to welcome in new Americans.

Abilene High Honor Gaurd presented the colors as the McMurry University band played the national anthem, marking the final step in citizenship for 25 people.

Judge John R. Parker of the Northern District of Texas said the day should serve as a reminder to all citizens, whether born or earned.

“I’m delighted that we were able to do it,” Judge Parker said. “It gave us an opportunity to celebrate 25 people who remind us of what a great privilege and responsibility it is to be a citizen of this country, something that all too often those of us who are born here tend to forget or take for granted.”

For new citizens like Hung Dao, this day means more opportunities and a new connection with family.

“It means more opportunities. It means to be more successful. It’s a great privilege to be here. I have three older sisters, and they started this process and they pushed me to go this way. It was challenging at first, but we finally made it, thanks to them,” Dao told KTAB/KRBC.

Geramdine Faivre and her family took the opportunity to gather and learn more about their new home country.

“We’ve been here for ten years. The kids are going to school, and we’re just learning with them about the history and how America works. So pretty smooth,” Faivre said. We’ve been waiting for a long time, so we’re proud to be part of the team.”

Fourteen countries were represented at the ceremony, including Mexico, the Philippines, and India.
