Man suspected of kidnapping Tampa mother & daughter found dead, police say

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A man who was suspected of kidnapping a Tampa mother and her 9-year-old daughter has been found dead, according to police.

Early Monday morning, an AMBER alert was issued for a missing 9-year-old girl from Tampa, who was believed to be abducted along with her mother, 34-year-old Sylvia Pagan.

Tampa police later confirmed that the girl was found safe in Suwannee County.

According to the initial AMBER Alert, the suspected abductor was Jovanni Caceres Steffani, 38.

Caceres Steffani was found dead in Suwanee County with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at about 2 a.m., Tampa police said.

However, Pagan is still missing as of this report.

Pagan was last seen at about 10 a.m. Sunday in the 10400 block of Altman Street. Officers have blocked off a portion of the street with caution tape.

She was described as being about 5 feet 3 inches tall and 155 pounds, and police say she was wearing a dress of an unknown color at the time.

“As detectives diligently work to locate Sylvia Pagan, we are deeply concerned for her overall well-being,” the department said.
