96-year-old completes record-breaking SeaTREK at Florida Aquarium

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — They say you can’t teach old dogs new tricks, but one Pennsylvania man may beg to differ.

Fred Johnson, 96, of Erie, Pennsylvania set a new record for the oldest person to participate in a SeaTREK at The Florida Aquarium.

Fred and his daughter Patty Sorensen signed up for the underwater walking experience while visiting Tampa.

“It just seemed like it’d be a lot of fun to do, and I’m glad I did it,” said Fred Johnson. “To see the fish swimming around, and to be right there with them, instead of looking at them through a window, it was exciting!”

The guided SeaTREK tours are designed for non-divers and give participants the chance to get up close and personal with coral caves, fish, spotted eagle rays, bonnethead sharks, and loggerhead sea turtles, the aquarium said.

The tours do not involve swimming and anyone ages 10 and up can participate.

“I’m just telling you right now, I would not have done this on my own,” said Fred’s daughter Patty. “Dad said he wanted to do it, so I did it. It was well worth the effort. We had a lot of fun!”

The tour is led by trained and certified divers and is available every weekend and on select weekdays, according to The Florida Aquarium. You can find more information or book a tour at their website.
