91-year-old St. Louis woman dies in head-on collision in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Ill. – Funeral arrangements are pending for a 91-year-old St. Louis woman who died Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision in Madison County, Illinois. A second woman also died in the crash.

The crash happened on April 7 on Highway 159, south of Route 140, in Fort Russell Township.

According to a statement from the Madison County Coroner’s Office, Delores A. Long was driving a 2006 Nissan Sentra on Highway 159 when, for reasons unknown, the Sentra crossed the center line and collided with a 2019 Dodge Caravan.

Long was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:50 p.m. The coroner’s office identified blunt head, neck, and chest trauma as the preliminary cause of death.

A passenger in the Dodge Caravan, identified as Julie L. Schroeder, was rushed to Alton Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m. Schroeder, of Bloomington, Illinois, was 63. The preliminary cause of death was ruled to be blunt head, chest, and abdomen trauma.

A final cause of death for both Long and Schroeder will be determined after the completion of routine drug and alcohol testing.

The Illinois State Police’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is still investigating the cause of the crash.
