90 Plus: Rose Morehead believes the key to life is understanding yourself

VILLE PLATTE, La. (KLFY) – “Don’t be too much in a hurry to get up in the morning to kneel and say our father, you understand?”

Born and raised in Evangeline Parish, Rose Morehead, 90 of Ville Platte is one of nine children.
Her father was a farmer. “He raised us all on the farm. He had seven boys and two girls. My momma had. She died when she was 38 years old.”

Rose says farming is how she was raised working in the fields. “You had to put a sack on your shoulder and pull it and pick cotton. If you get tired, you had to pick on your knees.”

Those were the days when a little was plenty. She remembers the bathtub being in the middle of a room. “Put that big can on top of that stove that that water heat then he poured it in the tub and we bring in cold water. When it was just about full, he and my momma would take their bath. After they are through, we go one by one taking our baths in that same water.”

She says people have it good these days. “They got it made in the shade and they still don’t want to do it in the shade.”

She had seven children. Rose explains she was married twice. She explains she cared for both her husband’s when they fell ill. “We ain’t have no commodity. We didn’t have no food stamps. They had no extra checks to go to the store. They didn’t have those things.”

She believed in education for her children. Rose made it through 9th grade. “I didn’t want them to be like I had. Me and my older brother couldn’t go to school like others did. We had to stay in the field and work. “

Rose says the key is to live life with a clear understanding. “If you have no understanding, how could you do you. You can’t do nothing because you have no understanding.”

Rose’s focus these days is on her children and their children being all right. “The Lord will take care of me. I’ve been through the storm, I’ve been there. I’m just here still because the lord is not ready for me yet.”
