83-year-old killed in crash near Murrells Inlet, coroner says

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — One person is dead following a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon near Heron Lake Court and Highway 17 bypass, the Horry County Coroner’s Office said.

The victim was identified as 83-year-old Michael Hanchulak of Murrells Inlet. Hanchulak was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, the coroner’s office said.

The crash happened at about 3:04 p.m. on Highway 17 near Wood Thrush Avenue and involved a 2000 Jeep Wrangler and a 2017 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Two people were in the Jeep and both were injured and transported by EMS to a local hospital be treated for their injuries. The driver of the Jeep, Hanchulak where later died at the hospital.

There was only one person in the pickup truck and they were not injured, SCHP said.

Hanchulak was driving a 2000 Jeep Wrangler west from Wood Thrush Avenue and the driver of a 2017 Chevrolet was traveling north on Highway 17 when the vehicles collided, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

That was all the information provided and South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
