8 South MS restaurants fail their health inspections during last two weeks, one twice

Violations for unclean surfaces and improper use of toxic substances were among the reasons eight South Mississippi restaurants failed their inspections with a C since March 16.

Restaurants and other food service establishments in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if all violations are corrected during the inspection and “C” if the violations are critical.

These restaurants and kitchens were cited:

Whistle Stop Cafe, 127 North Magnolia Drive, Wiggins, was inspected March 19 and had seven violations, four of them which were repeat offenses and three that were corrected during the inspection.

It was cited for:

Improper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use (repeat)

Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible (repeat)

Improper hot holding temperatures (repeat)

Toxic substance not properly identified, stored and used (repeat)

Corrected during the inspection were:

Food separated and protected

Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized

Food in good condition, safe and unadulterated

A follow-up inspection on March 28 resulted in another C when three of the violations were not corrected:

Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized (repeat)

Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible (repeat)

Improper hot holding temperatures (repeat)

The restaurant had no Cs from 2013 through 2020 and now has three since 2021.

Pedro’s Tacos and Tequila Bar, 3891 Promenade Pkwy. in D’Iberville had a scheduled inspection March 18. It was cited for:

Time as public health control procedures records (repeat)

Toxic substance improperly identified, stored or used (repeat)

Corrected during the inspection were:

Food separated and protected

Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized

Proper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use

A follow-up inspection on March 28 showed the violations were corrected and the restaurant scored a B.

This is the second C in two years.

Clark, 4600 Telephone Road, Pascagoula, was inspected March 26 for a permit renewal. It was cited for: No certified manager. This is the fifth time since 2017 the kitchen was cited for not having the required certified manager.

Wendy’s, 9455 U.S. 49, Gulfport, was inspected March 25 for a permit renewal. It had five violations, three of which were corrected on site.

It was cited for:

Food contact surface not clean and sanitized (repeat)

Improper date marking and disposition (repeat)

Corrected during the inspection were:

Food separated and protected

Proper cold holding temperatures

Toxic substance properly identified, stored and used

This is the second C dating back to 2017, with the previous one in 2022.

Waffle House, 1759 Beach Blvd., Biloxi, had a scheduled inspection March 26 and was cited for:

Sewage waste water not properly disposed

Corrected during the inspection were:

Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Food separated and protected

Time as public health control, procedures, records, which limits the time a food can be kept at room temperature before it is used or discarded

This is the first C since 2017 and the third dating back to 2010.

Burger King, 5400 West Aloha Blvd., Diamondhead, was inspected March 27 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:

Food contact surface not clean and sanitized

Last Inspection permit not posted

Corrected during the inspection was: Proper date marking and disposition

This was the first C dating back to 2017

Taco Bell Restaurant, 4403 East Aloha Drive, Diamondhead, was inspected March 27 for a permit renewal. It was cited for not having its last inspection grade posted. Corrected during the inspection was: Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

This was the second inspection at the restaurant after the kitchen scored an A in 2023.

Keith’s, 819 U.S. 90, Gautier, was inspected March 25 following a complaint. It was cited for: No certified manager.

This is the first C dating back to 2014.

Most restaurants, kitchens and food trucks inspected since March 16 in South Mississippi had no violations, with 141 kitchens scoring an A and 30 a B.
