UPDATE: 3 confirmed dead after crash and fire at Ghent toll booth on I-77 northbound

UPDATE: Wednesday, March 13, 2024 @ 11:33 AM | GHENT, WV (WVNS) — More information was released regarding the deadly car crash and fire at the toll booth on I-77 in Ghent on Monday, March 11, 2024.

According to Cpl. Duke with the West Virginia State Police, there were three total victims in the incident. Two people were in one car, while one was in another.

While identities were not released, it was confirmed that none of the victims were children.

Investigators are still working to determine where the victims were from and what caused the accident.

UPDATE: Monday, March 11, 2024 @7:26 p.m. | GHENT, WV (WVNS) — West Virginia State Police provided additional information regarding the earlier fire at the Ghent toll booth.

According to a press release from the West Virginia State Police, at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2024, a car traveling northbound on I-77 hit three cars that were stopped at the Ghent toll booth. The damage from the accident resulted in a fire.

West Virginia State Police Troop 7, as well as a West Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, are investigating the accident.

The West Virginia State Police also stated that there were multiple deaths, and according to Raleigh County 911 there were three confirmed deaths. Troop 7 is finding and informing family members.

Traffic on I-77 northbound is moving slowly and is being detoured onto Route 19.

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — I-77 northbound is closed due to a fire at the toll booth in Ghent near mile marker 28.

Our StormTracker 59 Tower Camera is showing stopped northbound traffic as black smoke rises above the toll booth. Multiple cars were seen with damage.

According to Scott Wilburn with Ghent Volunteer Fire Department, the fire started as a vehicle fire.

Injuries were sustained during the fire, however, the extent of those injured and the amount of people injured was not released.
