BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — It really was a “See ya later, alligator” moment for one homeowner in Hamburg, New York.

On Wednesday, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation seized an 11-foot, 750-pound alligator that had “numerous health-related issues,” from a home in Hamburg.

The department reportedly learned that the homeowner built an addition to his house and added an in-ground pool to keep the alligator in, which was roughly 30 years old. In addition, the man allegedly allowed members of the public to get in the water and pet the unsecured alligator.

The state said the man used to possess a license for the alligator, but it expired in 2021 and was not renewed.

The alligator’s health issues included blindness in both eyes as well as spinal complications, authorities said.

Authorities turned the gator over to a licensed caretaker, who will house and care for it until the gator can be properly transported for permanent care. The state said that evidence seized and consultation with a veterinarian will determine any potential charges against the homeowner.
