70-year-old woman in motorized scooter struck, killed in Salem

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 70-year-old woman in a motorized scooter was killed in Salem Wednesday morning after being struck by an oncoming vehicle, police said.

It’s the 13th traffic fatality in Salem so far this year, officials said.

According to police, officers responded to the intersection of Liberty St. and River Rd. around 9:45 a.m. after receiving reports of the collision.

“The initial investigation by the Salem Police Traffic Team determined a woman on a motorized chair was attempting to cross Liberty St. from east to west when she was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound on Liberty St. Witnesses reported the scooter operator entered the roadway close to oncoming traffic when the crash occurred,” police said.

The woman in the scooter, Lois Marshall, was taken to Salem Health, but later died from her injuries, police said. The driver of the vehicle, Jami Duhrkoop, 36, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to authorities.
