6 News receives Murrow for Breaking News coverage

WLNS-TV received a Regional Murrow award for breaking news coverage on Tuesday.

The station was given the distinction for its coverage of the mass shooting at Michigan State University in February of 2023. The recognition is given out by the Radio Television Digital News Association and is considered one of the more prestigious awards in electronic journalism.

The team at the station provided wall-to-wall coverage on-air and online from the time the shots rang out until early into the next morning. Three people were killed, five were injured, and the gunman took his own life a few hours after the shooting on campus.

“WLNS provided much-needed information and context to the public during a particularly harrowing time for Michigan State University, Lansing, the state and the nation,” said RTDNA President Dan Shelley.

“As local broadcasters, we have a duty to provide critical and sometimes life-saving information to our local communities, and the entire team here did everything they could to fill that responsibility while this horrific tragedy unfolded,” said WLNS-TV’s Vice President and General Manager Marci Daniels.

“There was a lot of misinformation spreading quickly during an extremely emotional time, but the team kept focused, stuck to high journalistic standards, and provided the community facts non-stop throughout the evening and into the next day,” she said.

“We will always remember Arielle, Alex, Brian, and all who suffered that horrible night.  Our hearts were broken.”

WLNS and 6 News received the Murrow against smaller market stations in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Markets are determined by the number of potential viewers. Markets 1-50 compete against each other in the large market group. Lansing, which is market 115, competes against other stations in markets 51+.

It’s the station’s 11th Murrow in the last 8 years.

The station also received the Breaking News award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters earlier this year for its coverage of the tornado that swept through mid-Michigan last August.
